What You Need To Know Before Starting a Monogram Business

What You Need To Know Before Starting a Monogram Business

If you enjoy embroidery and want to earn money from your hobby, a home-based Monogram Business may be the right move for you.

If you find yourself drowning in requests from friends, family, and friends of friends and family, starting a monogram business is definitely the right choice! So now that you’ve decided you want to start your own monogramming business, where do you start?

Should you get a computerized embroidery machine?

While this is a personal decision, it’s highly recommended. You don’t want to spend all day and night hand embroidering hats, towels, bags, and sweatshirts when you started a home-based business to have more time for yourself!

Instead, you should think about what you plan to do in your monogramming business and decide whether a commercial or home machine would be best for your needs.

What are some aspects of your business that you should consider?

  • Will your orders be larger or smaller?
Typically you’ll cater to smaller orders of a few towels or sweaters, unless you work for a large wealthy family or a local sports team. If you believe that most of your clients will have a small number of items per order, then a home machine would suffice. If you plan to expand at all, then it’s best to invest in a commercial machine.
  • How long should your turn-around times be?
If you want to have the quickest turn-around time, then you may want to purchase a commercial machine that can sew up to 1500 stitches a minute. This is great, in theory, but going this quickly could also cost you more time. When the machine speeds up, the noise and vibrations also increase, which could lead to thread breakage more often. And ultimately, it’s easier to rethread a home machine. Unless you plan on pacing your commercial machine, it may be better to get the one that’s easier to thread!
  • Do you plan to open a storefront anytime soon?
If so, you should definitely go with a commercial machine. When people visit you, a commercial machine will look more professional and impressive than a home machine. People will see it and think they could easily do it themselves, especially if they have a similar-looking machine at home. You don’t want this! They’ll learn the hard way that it’s not as easy as it looks, but you don’t want to lose your customers because your set-up doesn’t look professional!
